Jet2 has announced Keflavik as its latest destination from Newcastle International Airport, with flights starting from October 4. The route is part of the airline's 2027/28 Winter programme, which is now on sale. The south-west Iceland destination offers dramatic scenery and natural wonders, reachable in just under three hours from Newcastle.
Northern Lights and Geothermal Baths
Iceland is renowned for the Northern Lights, visible from September through April when dark skies provide ideal conditions for spotting the colourful lights of green, red, and blue under clear, cloudless skies, usually best found inland. Travellers can track three-day Aurora forecasts online.
The island also offers hundreds of geothermal options, from the world-famous Blue Lagoon to rustic natural hot springs. With over 170 public swimming pools and geothermal hot pots, ranging from luxury spas to budget-friendly local experiences, there is something for everyone.
Volcanic Landscapes and Ice Caves
Iceland sits directly on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the North American and Eurasian plates pull apart, making it one of the most volcanically active places on Earth. Day trips include the Raufarhólshellir lava tunnel caving tour and the Fagradalsfjall Volcano group hike with a geologist.
Most ice caves in Iceland are only accessible in winter, when colder temperatures make the ice stable enough to explore. Certified experts offer guided tours, including the Crystal Ice Cave in Vatnajokull Glacier, known for its striking vivid blue ice.
Golden Circle and Reykjavik
The Golden Circle route is a dramatic 140-190-mile scenic loop starting and ending in Reykjavík, combining historic sites, geothermal activity, and volcanic scenery. It passes through the Gullfoss and Bruarfoss Waterfalls, the Geysir hot springs area, and Þingvellir National Park.
Reykjavik, the world's northernmost capital city, is a lively capital with striking architecture, lively bars and cafés, a thriving food scene, and plenty of local character. Most main attractions, street art, and shopping are within walking distance, including the iconic Hallgrimskirkja Church with its 244ft steeple, which took 40 years to build.
