Supermarket digestives taste test: one rivals McVitie's for 60p less

A taste test of supermarket own-brand chocolate digestives has found that Morrisons' version rivals the iconic McVitie's biscuit while costing 60p less. Journalist Emily Malia tested milk chocolate digestives from Sainsbury's, M&S, Asda, Lidl and Morrisons, scoring each out of five stars.

Morrisons tops the ranking

Morrisons' chocolate digestives, priced at £1.20, received a perfect 5/5 score. Emily said: "The chocolate definitely brings more flavour in comparison to some of the other options, and I could have eaten the whole pack." The biscuit was identical in size to a standard digestive and featured the iconic pressed lettering, coming remarkably close to a McVitie's in virtually every respect.

Asda's version, also priced at £1.25, scored 4/5. Emily said: "I was disappointed to taste that the layer of the chocolate was thinner than most of the others, but in comparison, the biscuit tasted very close to McVities. It delivers the same aftertaste I find with the original and is definitely a good cheaper alternative if you can look past the lack of chocolate."

Mid-table results and a budget letdown

Sainsbury's and M&S both scored 3/5. The Sainsbury's biscuit, at £1.25, was considerably smaller than the McVitie's equivalent, containing roughly 20 biscuits per pack, with a harder crunch and a disappointing flavour. Emily said: "Meanwhile the chocolate, I'd prefer to have given a stronger taste. It felt like more milk, less chocolate. I can't say it's a bad biscuit, but it's not one I'd be craving to try again anytime soon."

The M&S version, also £1.25, had a far crunchier texture than a traditional digestive. Emily said: "While the chocolate tasted the closest to the McVitie's option, the crunch and harshness of the biscuit felt closer to a Hobnob than a digestive for me. They're definitely a tasty option, but if you're wanting something that replicates the original, this isn't it."

Lidl's cheap option fails to impress

Lidl's chocolate digestives, at 89p, scored just 2/5. Despite having a considerably thicker layer of chocolate than any competitor and packaging bearing a striking resemblance to McVitie's, the taste fell short. Emily said: "The biscuit itself, however, is far plainer in taste, while the chocolate feels overpowering, delivering what I'd describe as a 'cheap chocolate' taste in the most obvious way. It doesn't come close for me."

A packet of McVitie's Milk Chocolate Digestives currently retails at around £1.89, making the Morrisons version a cheaper alternative that matched the original's quality in the test.
