Morrisons' own-brand milk chocolate digestives have been rated the best supermarket alternative to McVitie's, scoring a perfect five out of five in a taste test while costing 69p less than the original.
Journalist Emily Malia sampled milk chocolate digestives from Sainsbury's, M&S, Asda, Lidl and Morrisons, rating each out of five stars. A packet of McVitie's Milk Chocolate Digestives is currently priced at approximately £1.89.
Morrisons takes the top spot
Morrisons' digestives, priced at £1.20, were identical in size to a standard digestive and featured the iconic pressed lettering. Emily said: "The chocolate definitely brings more flavour in comparison to some of the other options, and I could have eaten the whole pack." She noted the biscuit shared the distinctive 'bitty' texture that sets a digestive apart from other plain biscuits.
Asda and M&S close behind
Asda's version, also £1.25, was the same size as the original and looked similar. Emily said: "I was disappointed to taste that the layer of the chocolate was thinner than most of the others, but in comparison, the biscuit tasted very close to McVities. It delivers the same aftertaste I find with the original and is definitely a good cheaper alternative if you can look past the lack of chocolate." She rated it 4/5.
M&S, at £1.25, had a far crunchier texture than a traditional digestive. Emily said: "While the chocolate tasted the closest to the McVitie's option, the crunch and harshness of the biscuit felt closer to a Hobnob than a digestive for me. They're definitely a tasty option, but if you're wanting something that replicates the original, this isn't it." It scored 3/5.
Sainsbury's and Lidl disappoint
Sainsbury's, also £1.25, had roughly 20 biscuits per pack and was noticeably smaller than McVitie's. Emily said: "Meanwhile the chocolate, I'd prefer to have given a stronger taste. It felt like more milk, less chocolate. I can't say it's a bad biscuit, but it's not one I'd be craving to try again anytime soon." It scored 3/5.
Lidl's version, at 89p, featured a thicker layer of chocolate than any rival, but fell short. Emily said: "The biscuit itself, however, is far plainer in taste, while the chocolate feels overpowering, delivering what I'd describe as a 'cheap chocolate' taste in the most obvious way. It doesn't come close for me." It received 2/5.
