Stephen Graham is celebrating his 53rd birthday today, marking the end of a remarkable year that has seen him cement his status as one of the most acclaimed actors of his generation. The Kirkby-born star has had a year to remember, picking up an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA for his devastating portrayal of Eddie Miller in the hit series Adolescence.
A year of accolades
Over the past 12 months, Graham has achieved what few actors have managed before, completing a prestigious trio of awards. His acceptance speeches have repeatedly paid tribute to his roots, with the actor referencing the humble beginnings that shaped him. Earlier this year, the ECHO visited the row of shops in Northwood where Graham's journey began, following his BAFTA win.
Growing up in a nearby block of flats, Graham dreamed big, telling his dad he wanted to become an actor. His father nurtured that ambition by taking him to a local video rental shop, where he rented The Godfather, Taxi Driver, and The Deer Hunter. These 1970s classics ignited his passion and changed the course of his life, leading him from idolising Robert De Niro to starring alongside him in Martin Scorsese's The Irishman in 2019.
Reflecting on his journey
In his first acting award win last September, Graham reflected on how far he had come. He said: "This kind of thing doesn't normally happen to a kid like me. I'm just a mixed race kid from a block of flats in a place called Kirkby, so for me, to be here today in front of my peers and to be acknowledged by you is the utmost humbling thing I could ever imagine in my life, and it shows you that any dream is possible."
Graham has also been open about the challenges he has faced, particularly with his mental health. At the Golden Globes, he praised his wife, Hannah Walters, for her vital support, saying: "I've said it before, but you've saved my life. You saved my life. And to my two beautiful children, Grace and Alfie, I love you to the moon and back forever. My dad, my pops, my hero, and I would just like to dedicate this particular award to my mum and all my friends and family, you all know exactly who you are, and without you, none of this is possible."
Inspiring the next generation
His BAFTA win in May was the culmination of an incredible year, and once again he paid homage to his Kirkby upbringing. He said: "When I was a kid, I watched a telly programme called Scully, written by Alan Bleasdale, and it had the wonderful Drew Schofield in. He lived across the road from my nannas house so he showed me that I could be on the telly. Drew was such a wonderful man. He was my inspiration so for any young kid, no matter where you're from, anything is possible."
Graham's influence on the next generation was evident at the BAFTAs, where he was nominated for Best Lead Actor alongside two actors he has mentored: James Nelson-Joyce and Ellis Howard. James, who stars in This City Is Ours, told the ECHO: "Stephen Graham has opened the door for me and many other actors. He has held the door open on his way up to the very top. He has not forgotten about giving back and helping people. He gives advice on auditions and agents, I realise how lucky I was to be one of those people he looked out for. Stephen Graham deserves everything, I am not alongside him tonight. I am going to watch him from a distance. He deserves all of his flowers and I am just very honoured that I get to be here."
Looking ahead
Now, Graham is looking to the future. He will soon star in the big-budget Apple TV series Nocturne and has finished filming the upcoming movie Bunker. He has also collaborated with Orla Klein on a new book, Letters To Our Sons, a collection of letters from fathers offering advice and reflections on masculinity.
As he closes the chapter on 52, Graham is hoping 53 will be just as memorable. Fans have taken to social media to wish him well. Caroline Kiely said: "Great actor. Happy Birthday Stephen." Jo Harry added: "Happy birthday to an amazing actor." Samantha Harrison commented: "What a legend happy birthday. Stephen have a great day. Keep being you and doing a wonderful job."
