Alan Shearer Fires Back at Fan Who Criticised His World Cup Commentary
Shearer Hits Back at Fan Over World Cup Punditry Criticism

Alan Shearer jokingly told a football fan that they talk "bull****" after his punditry skills were criticised at the 2026 World Cup. The Newcastle United legend is currently in North America, providing commentary for select fixtures at the tournament.

Shearer Responds to Criticism

Shearer was on the microphone for England's tournament opener against Croatia alongside Lee Dixon, as the Three Lions won 4-2 in Group L. After launching his 'Hot Take Hotline' in collaboration with Betfair, he received criticism from a fan who called in.

The caller said: "Hi Shearer, I was unfortunately watching the England match last night and I have to say that Lee Dixon is some co-commentator, you know? First, he’s an Arsenal legend and second, he’s a legend of the commentating game as well. You should really up your game."

Not one to pull any punches, the 55-year-old responded: "Haha, that is fair enough. Everyone’s entitled to their opinion. It’s not my fault you talk bull****."

Shearer Slams Hydration Breaks

Elsewhere, Shearer also lambasted FIFA's decision to introduce hydration breaks at the 2026 World Cup. A separate caller said: "These new hydration breaks are ridiculous. They totally break the rhythm of the game."

Shearer replied: "I totally agree with that. For players' safety, when it’s too hot, yes, absolutely have a hydration break. But, for example, England’s game was air conditioned - 21 degrees. Perfect temperature with a roof over. So, there is absolutely no need for players’ welfare to have a hydration break. We all know what they’re for. We all know why they have brought them in. And the vast majority of time, unfortunately, it’s not for player welfare. It’s for adverts."

The hydration breaks, which usually occur around the 25th and 75th minute marks, have been met with a frosty reception from fans inside the grounds. Lasting a couple of minutes each time, choruses of boos have been heard as players return to the sidelines while a song plays out.
