Robertson reads emotional letter from Jota's wife before WC

Former Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson has shared an emotional letter from Diogo Jota's late wife, Rute Cardoso, ahead of this summer's World Cup. Robertson, who was close friends with Jota during their time at Anfield, read out the heartfelt message in a video on FIFA's YouTube channel.

Jota's tragic death

Diogo Jota, 28, died in a car accident in Zamora, Spain, on July 3, 2025, alongside his brother Andre. The tragedy sparked an outpouring of global support, with floral tributes placed outside Anfield. Jota's sons, Dinis and Duarte, joined Liverpool and Wolves players in an emotional tribute at Anfield on Boxing Day, while Cardoso watched from the stands.

Cardoso's letter to Robertson

In the letter, Cardoso wrote: "Andy, I'm writing to you with a heart full of longing, gratitude, and above all pride. Diogo often spoke of you, of the friendship you built, the battles you fought together, the laughter, and the conversations about dreams. The World Cup was one of those dreams. When I heard your words after Scotland qualified, I realised Diogo never truly left the pitch."

She added: "You won't be going alone; you'll be taking his dream with you too. Thank you for not forgetting him, for turning pain into strength. Cherish that dream, Andy. Live it for yourself and for him."

Robertson's response

After reading the letter, Robertson said: "It's amazing of Rute to take the time to write me a letter. It sums up the person she is. I'd been to their wedding, celebrated trophies with her and Jots. That letter will stay with me for a very long time. We've just got to carry him with us. His name will never be forgotten."

Robertson, who is set to join Tottenham after the World Cup, reflected on their shared dreams: "The 2022 World Cup was when we became close. He missed out due to injury, and Scotland didn't qualify. We spoke about what it would mean to be at the next World Cup. I'm gutted that was taken away from him, but I'll carry him in my heart. I'm playing for both of us."
