Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man has arrived in cinemas after a premiere earlier this week, with a Netflix release set for March 20. The film marks the first big-screen outing for the BBC drama, with Cillian Murphy reprising his role as gangster Tommy Shelby.
During a Reddit Q&A, creator Steven Knight said newcomers could enjoy the film without having seen the series. However, he recommended three episodes to enhance the experience. The first is the very first episode of season one, which Knight said ‘lays out what this whole series is about’ and introduces Tommy Shelby.
The second is the season two finale, featuring a scene where Tommy faces execution. ‘They’ve already dug his grave,’ Knight said, describing how Tommy asks for a cigarette and reviews his life before a twist saves him. The moment reveals Tommy’s uncertainty about life and death.
The third is the series finale, which deals with the death of Aunt Polly (Helen McCrory) and a false brain tumour diagnosis. Knight noted Tommy’s decision to spare a man, contrasting the black horse from the first episode with the white horse he rides away on, suggesting a transformation.
Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man is in cinemas from March 6 and arrives on Netflix on March 20. Knight emphasised that the film stands alone but these episodes deepen the experience.
