Rita recently attended the premiere of her Disney film Descendants: Wicked Wonderland in Los Angeles, where she plays the Queen of Hearts. She reunited with her husband, director Taika Waititi, marking their first public appearance together in months due to work schedules. Discussing the movie, she said: "I’ve always felt like I had that villain Queen of Hearts strain. In this movie she is nicer, but is she really? I love that the Queen of Hearts has two sides to her." She added: "She will do anything to protect her babies. She has an extra baby in this one so I have two girls now. You never know what to expect with Descendants storylines."
Rita revealed that she and Brandy, who plays Cinderella, got into "so much naughty stuff" behind the scenes. She said they bonded over their motherly instincts: "I really tapped into my motherly instinct in this movie because we find out that I have another daughter in this new sort of universe. I will do anything to protect my kids." She continued: "Me and Brandy really bonded on that. The Queen of Hearts and Cinderella are very close in this franchise as well, especially in this movie."
