The Princess Diana Memorial Playground in Kensington Gardens has reopened after a £3million transformation, just in time for the summer holidays. The beloved family attraction, which has welcomed over a million children and carers annually since 2000, now boasts improved accessibility, upgraded facilities, and new play areas.
Royal History and Tribute
The playground, inspired by J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan – one of Diana's favourite stories – was created as a living tribute rather than a traditional monument. It celebrates Diana's belief that every child should have the freedom to play, imagine, and discover.
When it opened in June 2000, no senior royals attended. King Charles, then Prince of Wales, had a prior engagement in Dorset, while Princes William and Harry stayed away due to media attention. Earl Spencer made a brief appearance, and government ministers officially opened the site.
Royal Family Connection
In 2014, Catherine, then Duchess of Cambridge, visited the playground with Prince George, her eldest son. The informal visit, without official photographs or ceremony, highlighted the playground's purpose as a place for childhood, not royal formality.
Revamped Features
The centrepiece pirate ship has been rebuilt as a three-level galleon with crow's nests, bridges, tunnels, slides, and wheelchair-accessible spaces. New accessibility features include wheelchair-friendly pathways, raised play tables in the water play area, and sensory planting. The redesign also includes musical play equipment, raised sand tables, interactive games, and quieter shaded spaces.
Family facilities have been upgraded with picnic areas, an on-site café, and nearly double the number of toilets, including additional accessible facilities.
Enduring Legacy
The playground remains a free attraction, dedicated to Diana's belief in the importance of play. As one of London's most cherished family destinations, it continues to inspire new generations, ensuring Diana's legacy lives on through the joy of childhood.
