Anne's workload continues despite age
The Princess Royal, who turns 76 today, has again clocked up the most engagement days in the calendar year, even though the King beat her to the total amount. She has made it known that she has no plans to retire.
Anne's own words on retirement
In an interview with the Press Association last year, Anne shut down rumours that she would retire in the near future. She said: "It isn't really an option."
She added: "It really isn't written in, no. It isn't really an option, no, I don't think so. You're jolly lucky... if you can continue to be more or less compos mentis and last summer I was very close to not being. Take each day as it comes, they say."
A near-fatal accident
Anne's comments came a few months after her accident involving a horse the year before. She was rushed to Southmead Hospital in Bristol in June 2024 after being struck by a horse while walking on her Gatcombe Park estate in Gloucestershire.
Following her three-night hospitalisation, the princess spent three weeks recuperating at home before returning to public duties. She revealed how "[she was] sharply reminded that every day is a bonus".
