More than 22,000 fans donned tight plastic bald caps in 30°C (86°F) heat at Pitbull's BST festival headline show in Hyde Park, London, on Friday, setting a Guinness World Record for the 'largest gathering of people wearing bald caps.' The crowd, dressed in white shirts, black ties, and aviator sunglasses, paid homage to the rapper, who also wore a cap to count toward the record.
Record-Breaking Moment
Pitbull, accepting the award in an all-black suit, said: 'I'm speechless. Who would have thought a first-generation Cuban would be record-breaking and record-making?' Guinness World Records adjudicator Will Munford confirmed that 22,141 people were officially counted, with 400 volunteers checking attendees and drone footage monitored by 42 counters backstage. Munford noted that Pitbull, though bald, had to wear a cap to be included, as the record was not for 'largest gathering of bald people.'
Fan-Driven Initiative
The record attempt originated from a fan, Jack Remmington, a podcast host and cultural commentator. After BST announced Pitbull's performance, Remmington posted a TikTok video suggesting the 65,000-person capacity could break the world record for people cosplaying as Pitbull. The video went viral, leading to contact with Guinness World Records and a BBC Radio 1 segment where Pitbull agreed via text with his signature 'Dale!'
Fans like Lucy, 30, who attended with her best friend Hannah, scrambled to find caps after three fancy dress shops sold out. 'It feels like an inside joke with 60,000 people,' she said. The trend of Pitbull mimicry began in 2021 with a few fans and exploded into a massive movement, with the rapper embracing fans as 'baldies' and selling official Mr Worldwide kits and bald caps on his website for £40 and £10 respectively—both now sold out.
Community and Impact
Munford emphasized the record was 'not novelty,' citing the large number of participants and the pre-existing grassroots internet community. Attendees like Shawna and Jack, both 33, came for a nostalgic night. 'It's the least pretentious crowd I've ever been in at a gig,' Shawna said. 'The world is literally burning, so why wouldn't I stick a bald cap on and dance around to some pop bangers I loved at uni to feel something good?'
As Pitbull took the stage at sunset, he was visibly moved by the sea of impersonators. 'It's a blessing and an honour to see the baldies in London,' he said, acknowledging the historic moment.
