Phyllis Logan becomes 'madcap' gran in new Channel 5 drama

Phyllis Logan, known for her role as Mrs. Hughes in Downton Abbey, makes her television comeback as the lead in the new Channel 5 comedy Play for Today: Village Idiot, airing Friday, October 2 at 9pm.

The 70-year-old actress, from Paisley, plays Barbara, a grandmother who chains herself to her cottage to prevent its demolition for a high-speed railway line. The drama is the second installment of the Play for Today series, which features self-contained productions championing broadcast debuts and professional development for industry newcomers.

A 'madcap' grandmother with a cause

Logan, married to actor Kevin McNally, described her character: "She's a force to be reckoned with, but also a bit madcap, which made her great fun to play! She and her grandson have a lot of history together, even though they've been somewhat separate in their lives since he became an adult and moved to London."

She added: "I loved exploring that relationship, and also Barbara's relationship with Liam, who is one of the locals. It was lovely working with the youngsters, Max Harwood and Angus Imrie. I went for a Midlands accent with her, and my husband is from Birmingham, so hopefully he would have told me if I was going horribly wrong!"

Plot and cast of Village Idiot

Village Idiot is a "sharp, heartfelt comedy" written by Samson Hawkins and directed by Rhys Aaron Lewis, capturing the struggles of rural England. The synopsis reads: "Logan plays Barbara, a ferociously stubborn English grandmother who literally chains herself to her beloved cottage when it's threatened with demolition by High Speed train developers."

Harwood stars as Peter, the company's smooth, painfully polite liaison sent to remove her, only to discover she is his estranged grandmother. The synopsis continues: "What follows is a gloriously awkward battle of wills: Barbara's weaponised stubbornness and talent for public protest versus Peter's frantic attempts to keep his corporate career (and dignity) intact."

As the standoff grows into a small-town circus of press, protestors, and well-meaning locals, both are forced to reckon with what 'home' really means - and whether blood ties can survive locked gates, padlocks, and a very watchful village.

The cast also includes former EastEnders actress Kacey Ainsworth, who plays Cathy Keating in Grantchester, Stranger Things star Max Harwood, The Crown's Angus Imrie, and Bridgerton star Kathryn Drysdale. Channel 5 added: "Witty, warm, and sharply observed, Village Idiot captures rural England on the brink of change, balancing laugh-out-loud comedy with genuine emotional punch."
