Charlie Nicholas still hopes for Soccer Saturday reunion after Sky exit
Nicholas still hoping for Soccer Saturday reunion

Charlie Nicholas says there is still hope that the former Soccer Saturday crew could reunite for adoring fans again.

Nicholas was loved by a whole new generation after doing the Saturday afternoon slot on Sky with Jeff Stelling and Co for years. He was unhappy how it ended but says he misses the rest of the crew - including Phil Thompson, Chris Kamara, Paul Merson and Matt Le Tissier - more than the show.

Roy Keane would have fitted in

Nicholas also thinks outspoken pundit Roy Keane would have fitted right in and is the pundit he enjoys the most. He does live appearances, supporter events and talks so often sees fans of the show.

Nicholas said: “What I do is miss doing shows with the guys. We still keep in touch. We're still hopeful that we would do maybe a wee podcast here and there, but we don't know.

“I do like Keane. He's unpredictable. That's what I like about him. I think he'd be at home in that studio on Soccer Saturday.

Memories of the show

“I remember we took Jamie Carragher once. I stepped to play to let him get a little run at it. I think he was injured like that, and he enjoyed it.

“And everybody could see the same. Everybody we invited in always had a great time. We always looked after them. But it was like a proper team. We had so many people come up to us and say: ‘This was the best show ever.’

“I think Roy can be a bit abrasive in terms of certain individuals. And he has to put his hand up a couple of weeks later after he said something about Bruno Fernandes. But he's man enough to say he got it wrong.

“But I always tell this story. We got so much wrong; it was scary. We used to all have a bet, £20 each so a £100 acca between us - Merse wasn’t allowed to bet - and I would put the bet on. And we didn’t win for three-and-a-half years! That’s how good punters we were.”
