UK weather maps reveal Arctic blast to plunge temperatures to -1C

New weather maps suggest parts of the UK could see temperatures plunge to -1C later this month, with colder conditions expected to grip the country on Thursday, October 22.

The latest maps from WXCharts, valid for 6am, show temperatures falling to around -1C in parts of the Scottish Highlands, especially across northern Scotland, where the coldest conditions are expected.

Regional temperature breakdown

Elsewhere, temperatures could dip to around 1C to 3C across central and southern Scotland, while northern England could see lows of between 2C and 4C. Further south, temperatures are forecast to remain slightly milder, with much of southern England experiencing lows of around 4C to 6C, although some areas could feel distinctly chilly during the early morning.

The charts suggest a colder spell could develop as Britain moves deeper into autumn, with shorter days and longer nights increasing the likelihood of overnight temperature drops.

Met Office offers different outlook

However, the forecast only provides a provisional outlook. The Met Office has offered a different outlook, suggesting temperatures could remain above average across much of the country.

In its forecast covering Wednesday, October 14, to Friday, October 23, the national weather service predicts changeable conditions, with Atlantic low-pressure systems bringing spells of rain and strong winds.

It said: "Remaining changeable through this period, as a series of low pressure systems run across the North Atlantic, often to the north and northwest of the UK."

Above-average temperatures expected

The forecaster added that western and northwestern areas could experience above-average rainfall, while southern and eastern regions may enjoy longer dry spells. Despite the possibility of brief cooler interludes, the Met Office expects temperatures to remain "a little above average in many areas", with southeastern Britain potentially experiencing some unusually warm conditions for October.

This has been confirmed by another forecaster, Netweather, which has predicted temperature levels to rise to 21C on Tuesday, October 13.
