Kevin Keegan's legacy and humility remembered

Jennifer Basannavar says Kevin Keegan's permed hairstyle set a trend in football, and his time at Hamburg led to German boys being given the name Kevin. Rev Henry Corbett fondly recalls Keegan's visit to Shewsy youth club in Liverpool.

Keegan's influence in Germany

Jennifer Basannavar writes that Keegan's move to Hamburg and his newly permed hairstyle set a trend in football. He resolved to learn German to communicate better with teammates. This was repaid by German boys being given the name Kevin. British-German school exchanges in the 1990s always had at least one boy named Kevin, proud of their name and Keegan's positive contribution.

A humble visit to Liverpool youth club

Rev Henry Corbett recalls Keegan coming to Shewsy youth club in Everton, Liverpool in the late 1970s. Keegan, just back from winning two Ballon d'Ors at Hamburg, insisted on no publicity. He stayed for two hours, played table tennis and football with young people, and answered questions with honesty, humour and wise advice. He wanted to encourage and help young people in an inner-city area.
