The Princess of Wales played a key part in one of her husband’s passion projects, a royal expert has claimed. Prince William launched the Earthshot Prize in 2020 with the aim of awarding five individuals or organisations each year for providing impactful and sustainable solutions to the planet's environmental problems. The idea was first initiated in 2019.
William's words on the prize
In 2025, William told Hello! Magazine ahead of the ceremony in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: “As a father, I think constantly about the world my children will inherit. I want them to grow up surrounded by nature, opportunity and a sense of hope about the future. But I also know that unless we act boldly now, that future is at risk. The Earthshot Prize is about turning the tide, about proving to our children that we are willing to fight for their tomorrow.”
Catherine's role revealed
Now, a royal commentator has revealed just how important Catherine’s role was in William materialising his idea. The Mirror’s royal editor, Russell Myers, told OK! Magazine: “The secret to the Prince and Princess of Wales's marriage is support for one another throughout their roles as working royals and as parents to their three young children.” He added: “Everything they do is in tandem and this includes Catherine being the catalyst for William launching the Earthshot Prize, when he doubted it could become the global success it has.”
Upcoming joint venture
Catherine is tipped to join her husband in India in November for this year's awards. Catherine previously accompanied him at the star-studded event in London in 2021 and Boston in 2022. Kensington Palace aides and mandarins at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office are said to be confident that this is the right time for the couple to launch their biggest joint venture in four years. A royal source said: “The Prince and Princess of Wales stand ready to assist the country however they can. The plans are in the early stages but it promises to be an amazing experience.”
