Kate Lawler has revealed that she and her husband had to go to couples' therapy twice during their recent holiday. The TV star, 46, who shot to fame as the first female winner of Big Brother in 2002 but these days is best known for presenting across This Morning and Loose Women, is married to Martin Bojtos and has five-year-old daughter Noa with him.
Candid admission on social media
The trio recently jetted off on holiday for a month but on Thursday, Kate took to social media to make the candid admission that parenting is the most difficult thing she and her husband have ever had to do and they had to seek professional help during their lengthy trip away.
She wrote on Instagram: "I know it’s not the same for everyone but becoming parents has been the hardest thing we’ve ever navigated as a couple. During the month we were on holiday, we had couples therapy twice. Over the past five years, speaking with Diana regularly has helped us more than words can describe."
Advice for couples
Kate concluded her post by telling her followers what she had learned from the sessions and reminded them that, even though it might be tough now, childhood will fly by and eventually parents will be on their own as a couple once again.
She added: "And if there’s one thing I’ve learnt from these sessions it’s this… Always remember to protect your relationship as fiercely as you do your family, because one day the chaos will settle, and it’ll be the two of you again." Over the top of the image she shared onto Instagram, Kate wrote: "If you can get through the stage of marriage where it's all about the kids and working then you can get through anything."
Support from fans
Fans piled into the comments section to support Kate over her bold statement. One said: "So agree that marriage counselling is the way if it’s available. It’s help’s at every stage. I always say to couples they should do it before they get married." Another said: "The part that no one says out loud is that a successful relationship (or marriage) is hard xx" and a third wrote: "Love this. I’ve always lived by what my mom instilled in me - I had my husband before my children, so our time is just as important."
Previous struggles
When Kate first became a mother, she used her social media platform to speak out about her postnatal depression at a time when she felt as if no one was really talking about how "hard" the first year can be. At the time, she said: "When I first had Noa, I felt like nobody was really being honest on social media about how the first year of parenting is, how it’s possible that you can love your child with every fibre of your being, but also find it really mundane and hard. It’s life-changing."
Admitting that it took a toll on her relationship with Martin, who she met in 2013 and married in 2022, Kate said: "I feel like nobody talks about how tough [becoming parents] is on your relationship. So I’m like, ‘Hey, just so you know, if your relationship is in a bad place after having a child, it’s completely normal.’ There are tools out there to help you. If it wasn’t for our therapist, Diana, I don’t know where we’d be."
