Jon Snow, the iconic Channel 4 presenter, has shared his journey with Alzheimer's disease and becoming a father at 73. The broadcaster, who retired in 2021 after 32 years at Channel 4 News, now returns to screens for a new documentary, Jon Snow: A Last Big Story, airing on June 20.
Early Career and Retirement
Snow began his broadcasting career in the early 1970s at LBC Radio. He joined ITN in 1989 before moving to Channel 4 News, where he became a household name until his retirement in 2021.
Fatherhood in His 70s
Snow became a father for the first time at 73 with his wife, Dr. Precious Lunga, who is 27 years his junior. They welcomed a son, Tafara, via surrogate in 2021. Snow already had two adult children from a previous relationship. He told Saga Exceptional: "When he was born, life felt complete. I'm at complete ease with late fatherhood."
Alzheimer's Diagnosis
Snow revealed he has been living with Alzheimer's for four years. After retiring, he woke up one day and told his wife he was late for work. A brain scan confirmed the diagnosis. In the documentary, Snow says: "At the beginning, I wanted to hide it. There are moments when it pops up, but it's not an all-day, every-day condition."
Jon Snow: A Last Big Story airs on Channel 4 on Saturday, June 20 at 8pm.
