Female ITV World Cup pundit Emma Hayes was placed in a kitchen-like set for tactical analysis, sparking anger and debate among viewers. Dan Walker and others criticized the broadcaster's decision.
Controversy Over Set Design
ITV's World Cup coverage has ignited a fierce debate after a tactical analysis segment featuring Emma Hayes left fans questioning the broadcaster's creative choices. The former Chelsea Women boss and current United States head coach was called upon to break down England's performance during a hydration break in the Three Lions' 4-2 victory over Croatia. Hayes used a chalkboard to explain the tactical battle, but the setting—a set resembling a kitchen with cupboards in the background—quickly became the talking point on social media.
Viewers criticized the concept as "stupid" and questioned ITV's decision-making. Among those weighing in was former BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker, who posted on X: "I really like Emma Hayes and I think she's an insightful pundit. I'm not sure why they have decided to make it look like she's writing the specials on a bistro chalkboard! I really want to know what's in those cupboards. Come on England."
Reactions from Viewers and Presenters
Presenter Cristo Foufas shared a clip and questioned whether ITV had gotten the presentation wrong, writing: "I'm not sure ITV are massively advancing the idea of women's equality in football by having Emma Hayes give her analysis from a set which looks like she's stuck in a kitchen?" The clip generated hundreds of comments, with one fan saying: "Surely they could give her a digital screen and a mouse. The two chalkboards go with the kitchen." Another commented: "We honestly thought it was a skit. Why's she in a half-built kitchen?" A third added: "I thought it was an advert at first. Stupid idea. I was distracted with the kitchen, waiting for her to advertise kitchen doors."
Others focused on the quality of Hayes' analysis. One supporter wrote: "I thought she analysed this game and the tactics superbly well. You can tell why she coaches at national level. Brilliant." Another added: "Emma's analysis is excellent, but the camera angles and the set looked off."
Hayes' Role in ITV Coverage
Hayes has become a standout voice in ITV's World Cup coverage, receiving widespread praise for her tactical insight during England's opening victory. However, while viewers united on the quality of her punditry, there was far less agreement over placing one of football's most respected coaches in front of such a setup.
