Inspirational football coach wins award one year after death

Wes Greenhalgh, a devoted father and football coach, has been honored with the Liverpool FA Coach of the Year (Female Pathway) award a year after his death. The 41-year-old from Newton-Le-Willows dedicated himself to coaching his daughter Delilah's team at Rainford Ladies Athletic Football Club, even as he battled cancer.

A coach's legacy

Wes took over the under-9s team in 2023, transforming a group of players into finalists. He spent four days a week coaching, building friendships and confidence among the girls. His wife Amy described him as "the most caring, generous, honest person" who always fought for the underdog.

Battle with cancer

Wes was diagnosed with head and neck cancer in January 2023. After intensive treatment, he was declared cancer-free later that year. However, the cancer returned in 2024, spreading to other parts of his body. Despite his illness, he continued coaching until March 2025, attending games from the sidelines.

Final months

Wes entered hospital in April 2025 and moved to a hospice shortly before his death on May 1, 2025. His wife said he remained strong and hopeful throughout, wanting to protect his family even in his most terrifying moments.

Community tribute

In memory of Wes, his family and the football team have organized a community fayre called Wes' Supersonic Fun Day on June 28 at The Junction Pub in Rainford. The event will raise money for CHICS, a children's cancer support charity at Alder Hey Children's Hospital.

More than 50 businesses and community groups will participate in the free event, running from 12pm to 4pm. Donations can be made via JustGiving, and more information is available on the Wes' Supersonic Fun Day Facebook page.
