Iain Stirling, the Scottish comedian known as the voice of Love Island, has revealed that his distinctive tones often get recognised in awkward situations, such as during serious phone calls about banking or mortgages. The 41-year-old appeared on The One Show to discuss his new BBC series Race Against the Tide.
Recognition in Unusual Places
During his visit, host Roman Kemp noted that Stirling's voice has become instantly recognisable on adverts and TV, and asked if it gets recognised in unusual places. Stirling confirmed that members of the public frequently identify his voice and go, "Oh, it's him."
He elaborated: "But normally when I'm on the phone trying to do serious, it's quite awkward when you're doing like online banking." He gave an example: "They're trying to like sort out a mortgage and someone's like, 'Are you the Love Island guy?' But tonight I would like an extension on my overdraft, please. If that's possible, please."
New Series Race Against the Tide
Stirling was on the show to promote his new series, which features seven teams, each made up of a professional sand sculptor and a complete newcomer, competing to craft sand sculptures before the incoming tide washes them away.
Reflecting on the tension as the waves approached, Stirling previously remarked: "It's sort of crazy in the world of TV because there's always variables that you can control a bit – if something goes wrong, we can all go, 'Right, let's all pause for lunch, we'll stop the clocks.' But with this show, you literally couldn't. So, the jeopardy was palpable in real time, and hopefully that translates onto the telly as well. When the tide's coming in, the tide's coming in and there's nothing you can do about it."
The One Show airs at 7pm on BBC One on weekdays.
