M&S Traditional Porridge has been named the best instant porridge pot in a taste test of seven supermarket own-brand options, beating Quaker. Tesco's Instant Oats Original took second place, while Morrisons' Original Porridge ranked last due to its high sugar content.
How the test was conducted
Instant porridge pots from Aldi, Asda, Lidl, M&S, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, and Tesco were compared against Quaker Original. Each was rated on taste, texture, and value for money. The Quaker pot cost £1.30 for 45g, making it the most expensive per gram.
Top performers
M&S' Traditional Porridge, priced at £1 for 70g, produced a thick, creamy texture described as closer to rice pudding than instant oats. It contained just 4.1g of sugar and required no added sweetening. Tesco's Instant Oats Original, at 41p for 55g, also impressed with its thickness and lightly sweet flavour, containing 9g of sugar.
Budget options and bottom rankings
Aldi's Golden Bridge Original Porridge, at 37p for 50g, offered good thickness and natural flavour, scoring 7/10. Lidl's Crownfield Instant Oats, also 37p, had only 5.9g of sugar but a bitty texture. Morrisons' Original Porridge, at 55p for 55g, was found overly sugary with 12.2g of sugar and a thin consistency, scoring 4/10.
