Football continues to shape baby naming trends in England and Wales, with Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane leading the charge. According to recent ONS data analysed by JoJo Maman Bébé, 2,153 babies were named Jude in 2025, potentially inspired by the Real Madrid midfielder. Meanwhile, 1,718 newborns received the name Harry, likely in tribute to England captain Harry Kane.
Top Football-Inspired Names of 2025
The study examined first names shared with current England squad members. Other popular choices include James (1,211 babies), Elliot (544), and Ollie (412). The full top 15 list features Nico (306), John (296), Anthony (206), Jordan (189), Marcus (170), Ivan (159), Morgan (128), Declan (112), Reece (60), and Dean (42).
Shifting Trends in Baby Naming
Anne Varsanyi, head of buying at JoJo Maman Bébé, commented: "Choosing a baby's name is one of the first opportunities parents have to express something about their family, whether that's honouring tradition, celebrating heritage or simply choosing a name they love." She added: "What's particularly fascinating about this year's data is seeing how quickly tastes can change. Some names that once filled classrooms have become increasingly rare, while others that were barely heard a generation ago are now among the country's favourites."
Impact of England's World Cup Run
With England reaching the World Cup semi-final and millions of supporters rallying behind the team, experts anticipate a fresh wave of football-inspired names climbing the popularity rankings. The influence extends beyond star players, with names like Declan, Morgan, and Ollie steadily gaining traction among new parents.
