Marvel fans are convinced that a destroyed New York City shown in the latest Avengers: Doomsday trailer is a sign that Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man is doomed.
Trailer sparks fan theories
The trailer, released on August 14, 2026, is packed with action and heroes looking grim. But an opening shot of a ruined city has led fans to speculate that this is Earth-96283, the world of Maguire's Spider-Man, first seen in the 2002 film.
On X, @sabooschin asked, 'Is this Tobey Maguire’s New York then?' while @1610SPlDEY joked, 'If you squint, you can see Tobey’s charred corpse.' On Reddit, LemonIcy2942 shared an image of the charred cityscape, writing: 'From the looks of it, this could be Earth – 96283, Tobey Maguire Spider-Man’s world.'
Unconfirmed role and cameo expectations
Rumors suggest the older webslinger may appear in the film, though neither Marvel nor Maguire has confirmed this. With the movie centered on multiverse destruction, fans expect numerous cameos.
The first trailer already shows Patrick Stewart's Professor X and Sir Ian McKellen's Magneto, along with other Fox X-Men battling Sentinels. Additionally, Ryan Reynolds appeared at San Diego Comic-Con in July to plead for a role, and Hugh Jackman made a similar plea onscreen at D23 on August 14.
Jackman and Reynolds pitch for roles
In a pre-recorded video at D23, Jackman said, 'Hey Kevin, hey D23, hope you’re all having a great time. I just wanted to check in, totally unprompted, and just wondering if you might need some help rounding out the cast.' Off-screen, Reynolds could be heard joking about being 'the golden ones, we’re special.' Jackman added, 'I would love to join, and I might be able to convince Ryan to appear in Avengers: Doomsday.'
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for release in cinemas on December 18.
