Fans have named Ricky Gervais' 'best ever' series, and it is not the cult classic The Office. The British comedian has created numerous celebrated titles, including projects for streaming platforms, both written by himself and co-created with Stephen Merchant.
His brand new project, Alley Cats, is available on Netflix from August 7, reigniting arguments among viewers over which show involving Gervais is the best, particularly those on the streaming giant.
Reddit sparks debate
While it remains to be seen where Alley Cats ranks among fans, one person sparked debate by posting on Reddit: "Extras was the best Ricky Gervais series ever!" Their theory is backed by the fact that it is the highest-rated Gervais series on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 94% overall score, higher than The Office.
For those unfamiliar, Extras follows Andy Millman, played by Gervais, who quits his day job to pursue fame in the film industry. Due to the "good luck" of real actors, Andy can't land big parts, so he works as an extra, meeting some of the biggest names in the business.
Fans agree on social media
One person agreed, claiming Extras deserves a higher ranking than The Office: "I often think it’s slightly better because of how good Stephen Merchant is." Another shared on Facebook: "I adore Extras much more so than The Office. The Christmas special they did had me filling right up, it was powerful and amazing."
Another replied, "I agree with many that Extras is better than The Office. Some of the performances are extraordinary, Les Dennis springs to mind. Series 2, in particular, is a masterpiece. My favourite thing by far that Ricky Gervais has done."
One person suggested Extras is better because it does not need a remake for an American audience, unlike The Office: "Although The Office is well liked around the world and has a lot of universals much of the humour and references are very British. I think that is much more prominent than in the Office than Extras which barely needs changing for an American audience."
Netflix rankings
Among shows made by Gervais exclusively for Netflix, Derek tops fan ratings with 89%, followed by After Life at 86%.
