Emmerdale viewers are in tears as the Dingle family makes a heartbreaking decision for beloved dog Monty, whose final scenes air this week.
The last episode featuring Monty will air tomorrow (August 5), following his devastating diagnosis. Monty first appeared in Emmerdale in 2018 as a companion for the late Zak Dingle, after the family's previous Irish Wolfhound, Alfie, passed away.
Monty's recent ordeal
In recent episodes, Monty was trapped in a shed that Kyle set alight, and Cain rescued him from the blaze. After a visit to the vets, the Dingles learned something more serious was wrong.
Paddy confirmed that Monty had a metastatic tumour, which explained why his recovery from smoke inhalation was slower than expected. As Cain gave Monty treats and hugged him, he said: "If there was anything I could do to make things better for you, you know I would, don't you? I would, you know, in a heartbeat."
A difficult decision
During Tuesday's episode (August 4), emotional scenes showed Cain deciding to make a tough choice. After spending the night on the sofa so Monty wouldn't be alone, Cain initially refused to give up hope. But later, he and Belle found Monty curled up next to Zak's grave.
Taking this as a sign, Cain accepted it was time to say goodbye. In tears, he explained the situation to Isaac and Kyle, with Isaac struggling to understand that Monty would be gone forever.
