Beyond Paradise and Death in Paradise star Kris Marshall has opened up about a heartbreaking moment in his life. The actor, best known for playing Detective Humphrey Goodman, has shared details of his struggles before finding fame, including being fired from a job at Iceland.
Struggles Before Stardom
Kris, who is currently filming the upcoming series of Beyond Paradise in Cornwall, has revealed he "struggled to make ends meet" while trying to break into acting. He took on various jobs, including shifts at a toothpaste factory and in the laundry at an abattoir.
In an interview with the Guardian last year, he said of the abattoir job: "That one was pretty grim - the smell will never leave me." He also recalled: "I was once fired from Iceland for wearing blue sunglasses on the till, and for a while, I knocked on the doors of people who hadn't paid their TV licences."
From Hiding to Hollywood
Before his big break, Kris described going from "hiding under my bed from the landlord because I couldn't pay my rent, to flying over to the Toronto film festival." Despite the rocky start, he has since starred in Hollywood films and award-winning series.
Currently, he plays DI Humphrey Goodman in the fictional town of Shipton Abbott. Beyond Paradise follows Humphrey as he swaps Caribbean shores for the English countryside, settling down with his fiancée Martha Lloyd, played by Sally Bretton.
Beyond Paradise Future
The programme has been popular with BBC audiences since its debut in 2023 and has been commissioned for a fourth series. Kris has confirmed production is underway, with filming taking place across the West Country.
The new run is expected to air on BBC One in 2026. Plot details remain under wraps, but the show's return has been warmly welcomed by fans. Death in Paradise and Beyond Paradise are available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
