Claire Sweeney has confirmed her departure from Coronation Street, with her final scenes airing on Monday, August 3. The actress, who joined the ITV soap in 2023 as Cassie Plummer, shared the news with fans on Instagram, expressing gratitude for her time on the cobbles.
A Dramatic Exit
Cassie's exit came after a tense storyline involving Tyrone's father, Ross Wilkes, played by Ian Burfield. It was revealed that Ross had paid Cassie for sex when she was just 15, leading to her pregnancy with Tyrone. After Cassie told her family the truth, Ross threatened to kill her if she interfered in his life again.
In the episode, Tyrone told his mother to leave Weatherfield after Ross drove a wedge between them. Ross was then seen driving a terrified Cassie away, later returning with a family photo that Fiz had given her.
An Emotional Tribute
Posting a video montage of her time on the show, Sweeney wrote: "Three years. What an incredible journey. From my very first scene with Dame Maureen Lipman, to moving into the Dobbs' house with my gorgeous Tyrone @alanhalsall love you son."
She also thanked her co-stars and the production team, saying: "What a ride it's been... I've been so lucky to be trusted with such fantastic storylines by a truly brilliant team of writers, and to work with the most talented directors, crew, make-up artists, costume department production and @cazlcampbell and everyone behind the scenes who make this extraordinary show what it is."
In her post, she concluded: "Being part of Coronation Street, such an iconic piece of British television, has been a genuine honour and a privilege. I'll treasure these three years forever. The tears you see from me in tonight's episode were very real."
Support from Fans and Co-stars
Fans and colleagues quickly flooded Sweeney with support. Alan Halsall, who plays Tyrone, commented: "Love ya mum." Other fans expressed their sadness, with one writing: "You're going to be missed so much," and another saying: "Hope you come back. Will miss your character. Good luck for your future work though."
Coronation Street airs weekday nights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
