Coronation Street fans have praised an 'important' decision in Betsy Swain's storyline as they witness her recovery after having had two strokes.
In scenes aired last month in the ITV soap, filmed in Salford, the teen was rushed to hospital after being found collapsed on the floor at her home, No.6 Coronation Street, by Ryan Connor. After her mums, Lisa and Carla Connor-Swain, rushed to be by her side, doctors confirmed Betsy had suffered a stroke at 18, before having a second while in the hospital.
Cause and aftermath
Doctors later confirmed the strokes were caused by a blood clot, resulting from neck artery damage due to a temporary loss of circulation. Betsy then had to explain to her mum that her boyfriend, Dylan Wilson, had strangled her during consensual sex, despite both believing the pressure applied was minimal.
As the storyline got underway, Corrie confirmed viewers would witness Betsy's challenging recovery journey as she transitions from hospital to home, navigating significant life changes, with hopes of highlighting the profound physical and emotional impact of a stroke at such a young age as Betsy battles to adjust to her new reality.
Recent scenes and viewer reaction
In Monday's (August 3) edition of Corrie, Betsy was seen talking to Ryan, expressing a desire to speak to her boyfriend but knowing her mum wouldn't be happy. Wanting to help, Ryan summoned Dylan to No.6, where Betsy tried to reassure him she doesn't blame him for what happened. However, the pair were interrupted by Lisa's return, who quickly lost her temper and demanded Dylan leave. As he scurried off, Ryan headed downstairs and told Lisa he had arranged the visit, much to her disbelief. As she railed at him for allowing Dylan into their home, Ryan suggested Lisa listen to what Betsy wants.
As Lisa fired back, Betsy shouted for her mum to stop. When Lisa rushed to her, the teen pushed her mum away, leaving the detective apologising as she cried into her daughter's lap.
Speech therapy session applauded
Betsy was next seen during Tuesday's (August 4) edition, visited by friends Lauren Bolton and Brody Michaelis, who were present when her speech therapist arrived for a session. As she struggled with her words, Betsy called on Ryan, who nudged Brody and Lauren to leave, as he also headed off for work. It was this speech therapy session that earned praise from viewers, while actress Sydney Martin's portrayal of the teen's health ordeal continued to be applauded.
