Legendary actress and singer Abbe Lane has died of natural causes at the age of 93. Her death occurred on Saturday, April 25, but was only recently confirmed and made public by her son, Curb Your Enthusiasm producer Steven Leff, who shared the news with The Hollywood Reporter.
Career Beginnings and Rise to Fame
Lane began her career as a child and became a major star throughout the 1960s and 1970s. She appeared in guest roles on popular TV shows such as Hart to Hart, Burke's Law, F Troop, The Flying Nun, The Brady Bunch, Love American Style, and Amazing Stories.
At age 16, she was discovered by big band leader Xavier Cugat while dancing in a Broadway show. He hired her to sing for his Latin-style band on a European tour, which boosted her popularity overseas. She went on to make more than 20 Italian films through the mid-1960s while continuing her singing career.
Personal Life and Later Career
Lane married Xavier in 1952 when she was 19 and he was 52; they divorced 12 years later. She later said he mentally abused her. In 1992, she wrote a semi-autobiographical novel, But Where Is Love?, about a teenage girl unhappily married to a much older man.
After returning to the US, she became a Las Vegas headliner and appeared on shows like The Ed Sullivan Show, The Tonight Show, The Red Skelton Show, The Milton Berle Show, The Hollywood Palace, and The Dean Martin Show. She was also a regular panelist on game shows including Password, The Match Game, To Tell The Truth, and What's My Line.
Memorable Roles and Tributes
Lane appeared in Hart to Hart opposite Robert Wagner and Stephanie Powers. One of her most memorable film roles was in the 1983 movie The Twilight Zone: The Movie, where she played a stewardess in the remake of the classic episode Nightmare at 20,000 Feet, starring John Lithgow.
Fans paid tribute on social media. One wrote: "My first celebrity photo was with Joan Rivers and Abbe Lane at the old Farmers Market in LA from 1977. Abbe Lane died today at age 93. RIP."
