Lorraine Kelly shares heartbreaking news after tragic death

Lorraine Kelly has announced the death of Hazel, a member of the Change + Check choir that supports her breast cancer awareness campaign, during Monday's episode of her ITV programme.

The Scottish broadcaster returned to screens on October 12 and delivered the news to viewers, describing Hazel as a "fantastic woman" who "will be very sadly missed."

Emotional announcement on air

While discussing the Change + Check campaign, which promotes breast cancer awareness, Lorraine revealed the loss. "Some sad news for you this morning, one of our Change + Check choir, Hazel, there she is, laughing as usual," she said as an image of the pair appeared on screen.

"[Hazel] has very sadly died. We are sending all our love to her family and friends she really was a fantastic woman and will be very sadly missed," Lorraine added.

Tributes from fans and colleagues

Lorraine had previously shared the news on her Instagram, posting a photograph of herself with Hazel and writing: "Sad news. Our Hazel has died. Thoughts with her family and friends and all the members of our Change and Check Choir. Glad I got to know this force of nature. CHECK YOUR BOOBS! ! !"

Supporters filled the comments with condolences. One wrote: "Oh my goodness, I am lost for words. What a special, kind lady, I am lost for words, what a honour to know Hazel." Another commented: "God bless you, Hazel, such a lovely lady." Susanna Reid remarked: "This is so sad," accompanied by a love heart emoji. A third supporter posted: "She will be very missed, sending lots of love to her family."

Campaign's impact since 2019

Lorraine has led the Change and Check initiative since 2019, which she launched with her producer Helen Addis, who received a diagnosis of grade three invasive breast cancer after discovering a lump while in the shower.

Educational stickers have been placed in thousands of changing facilities across the country as part of a nationwide awareness drive designed to teach women about checking their breasts. The initiative has seen 100 women reach out to Lorraine and Helen to confirm that the stickers played a crucial role in spotting their cancer early, resulting in prompt treatment.

Lorraine airs Monday to Friday at 9:30am on ITV1.
