An interior design expert has revealed five simple tricks to transform any room in your home without breaking the bank. Genevieve Rosen-Biller, founder of the bedding range Bed Threads, told FEMAIL that it is a 'myth' that a major overhaul requires deep pockets.
According to Genevieve, painting is the easiest way to completely refresh a space. She recommends starting by 'up-cycling' old furniture with a fresh coat of paint, such as transforming a weathered white chest of drawers with navy blue or forest green paint and adding new brass or glass handles. For walls, she suggests peachy, earthy, clay colours and petrol blue, noting that brighter, lighter colours open up a space and make it seem larger.
Secondly, Genevieve advises considering re-upholstering furniture instead of buying new. 'You can easily breathe new life into a tattered couch by placing a new cover over it,' she said, adding that changing cushion covers on a neutral couch makes a huge impact in her living room.
Clutter is the enemy of interior design, Genevieve warns. She recommends going room by room to pare back items, using affordable storage solutions like wicker baskets for magazines and cord storage systems from Amazon or IKEA for cables. 'Stripping back clutter won't cost anything but can make your home look much more expensive,' she said.
Finally, adding a bookshelf can instantly improve a room's appearance. Genevieve suggests arranging a mix of colourful books, photo frames, art, ceramics, glassware, scented candles, or house plants, keeping smaller objects at the front and larger ones at the back.
