A family from Sheffield has traded the UK 'rat race' for island life in Mauritius, describing their new existence as a 'permanent holiday'. Adam Short, 44, and his wife Tara, 38, along with their sons Spencer, nine, and Xander, four, moved to Grand Baie in July after visiting the island in November 2024.
The couple, who run their own businesses, were inspired to relocate after feeling they were 'just existing together' in the UK. 'We thought there had to be a better standard of life out in Mauritius – and there is,' said Adam. They now work fewer hours and enjoy more family time, with the children finishing school at 2.30pm.
One of the biggest draws is the cost of private education. The boys attend an international private school for £5,000 a year per child, compared to around £25,000 in the UK. 'We were spending that much just on breakfast and after-school clubs in the UK,' Adam noted.
The family rented out their four-bedroom UK home and took only five suitcases. They have settled into a four-bedroom rental with a pool near the beach. Despite living costs being similar to the UK, they say the quality of life is superior, with warm weather, friendly neighbours, and a family-focused culture.
Adam and Tara continue to run their UK businesses remotely, finding they are more productive due to the time difference. 'Everything about island life is incredible – the beaches, the weather, the food,' Adam added. The family has been warmly welcomed by locals and has no plans to return to the UK.
