California Schoolgirl Dies After Violent Bullying Attack with Metal Bottle
Every parent's worst nightmare has become a devastating reality for one family in California. Khimberly Zavaleta, a 12-year-old schoolgirl, has tragically died from severe brain injuries following a brutal attack involving a metal water bottle at the hands of school bullies, according to her grieving relatives.
Brave Intervention Leads to Catastrophic Outcome
Khimberly was not originally the target of the alleged bullying incident that occurred on February 17 at Reseda Charter High School in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles. Her family reports that when the young girl saw her older sister being attacked in a school hallway, she courageously stepped in to protect her sibling.
"My daughter goes and pulls her away, so they don't hit her sister, and that's when [Khimberly] gets hit in the head," her mother, Elma Chuquipa, told local media. "They were hitting her sister - my eldest daughter. In the video, you can see them pulling [Khimberly]. At one point, they hit her hard on the head, which led her to where she is now - in a morgue."
Medical Emergency and Tragic Decline
Initially, after the altercation with a group of students, Khimberly was rushed to hospital but was later discharged. However, the situation took a dramatic turn several days later when she suffered what her family described as a "catastrophic medical emergency." Her uncle later clarified that she had experienced a stroke following days of persistent headaches resulting from the attack.
According to a family fundraiser, "Major blood vessels in her brain ruptured, and she was rushed to UCLA Children's Hospital, [and] placed in an induced coma." The young girl was transferred between multiple medical facilities as doctors attempted to save her life.
Heartbreaking Decision and Final Moments
Khimberly's family agreed to a six-hour surgical procedure to remove accumulated blood from around her brain, despite being told she had only a one percent chance of survival. "We got together with my family…we agreed to do the [brain] surgery, which was a 1% chance, and I said, 'There is hope,'" her mother explained.
Tragically, medical professionals ultimately decided against operating because Khimberly's brain had already ceased functioning. At approximately 3:30 AM on February 20, with her family gathered at her bedside, the young girl's heart stopped beating.
Investigation and School Response
The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the incident as a homicide, though they have released limited information due to the involvement of juveniles. "Due to the sensitive nature of the investigation and the involved parties being juveniles, at this time, we are not releasing any further information related to the case," authorities stated.
The Los Angeles Unified School District has expressed profound sadness over Khimberly's death and confirmed they are cooperating fully with law enforcement. "The District remains committed to providing support to students, staff, and families affected by this loss, including counseling services and additional resources on campus," officials stated. "The District takes the safety and well-being of our students very seriously."
Family Awareness and Aftermath
Khimberly's mother revealed that the family was aware of ongoing bullying issues at the school but never imagined it would lead to such a tragic outcome. Surveillance footage of the altercation reportedly shows the attack but does not clearly capture the moment the bottle struck Khimberly. A 12-year-old student is currently under suspicion for the assault.
A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist the family with funeral expenses, medical bills, lost income during their grieving period, and relocation costs to find a safer educational environment for Khimberly's surviving siblings.
