Indiana School Secretary Faces Multiple Charges After Husband Discovers Student Affair

Alicia Hughes, a 31-year-old high school secretary from Indiana, is confronting serious legal repercussions following allegations of engaging in a sexual relationship with an underage pupil. The disturbing case came to light after her husband reportedly discovered her with an 18-year-old student on Valentine's Day, leading to a dramatic confrontation and subsequent police intervention.

Arrest and Investigation Details

Hughes, who was employed at the Randolph Eastern School Corporation in Union City, Indiana, was arrested on February 15. Police responded to a report of alleged battery, which unfolded after her husband confronted her with the 18-year-old pupil. According to the Union City Police Department, Hughes claimed her husband battered her during this altercation, though the investigation into that allegation remains ongoing.

Subsequently, investigators uncovered evidence pointing to a separate, more serious offense. Hughes has been charged with five counts of Child Seduction related to a sexual relationship with a different pupil, who was 17 years old at the time. Police statements indicate that Hughes engaged in sexual intercourse with this underage student on at least five occasions, highlighting the gravity of the charges against her.

Police Interview and Admissions

Video footage from Hughes' police interview, released recently, shows her in emotional distress as she admitted to the affair. During the interview, she confessed that her husband had caught her with the 18-year-old pupil, whom she identified as being involved in a physical relationship for about a month prior to the discovery. Hughes stated, "This is the third time that I have been with him," but clarified that the relationship did not begin until after the teenager turned 18.

In a further admission, Hughes revealed that she had met the 17-year-old pupil at a discount store and exchanged pictures with him, though she denied any sexual contact with this individual. She also alleged that her husband had been "physically and mentally" abusive towards her, but acknowledged that this did not justify her actions with either pupil.

Legal and Personal Consequences

Following her arrest, Hughes was transported to the Randolph County Jail, where she is being held on a $25,000 cash-only bond. Her husband, who has not been publicly identified, has since filed for divorce and sought emergency custody of their three children, adding a layer of personal turmoil to the legal proceedings.

The Randolph County Sheriff's Department is investigating the battery allegation, while the Union City Police Department has expressed gratitude for the cooperation and transparency shown by the Randolph Eastern School Corporation. In response to the incident, school superintendent Neal Adams issued a statement emphasizing the seriousness with which the matter is being treated.

"We recognize that situations of this nature are deeply concerning for our families, staff, and the broader community," Adams said. "Please know that we share those concerns and are taking this matter with the utmost seriousness, care, and urgency. Our focus remains on supporting our students and maintaining a safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment for all students."

Due to the ongoing investigation, the school has declined to comment on specific details about Hughes, underscoring the sensitive nature of the case and its impact on the educational community.
