Three members of a university fraternity have been arrested on hazing charges following the tragic death of an 18-year-old student at Northern Arizona University. The incident occurred after the student attended a rush event hosted by the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, leading to a multi-agency investigation and the temporary suspension of the chapter.
Student Found Unresponsive After Fraternity Event
Police officers discovered the male student unresponsive at a residential property on Saturday. Bystanders had already initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before emergency services arrived. Officers continued life-saving measures until paramedics reached the scene, but unfortunately, the student was pronounced dead at the location.
Preliminary information from law enforcement indicates that the student had participated in a rush event for the Delta Tau Delta fraternity on Friday night. The university confirmed that this gathering took place at an off-campus house, not on university property.
Fraternity Leaders Face Criminal Charges
The three individuals arrested are all 20-year-old leaders within the fraternity. They have been identified as Carter Eslick, who served as the new member educator; Ryan Creech, the vice president; and Riley Cass, the treasurer. Each faces a criminal charge of hazing in connection with the student's death.
Attempts to contact legal representatives for the arrested individuals were unsuccessful, as lawyers did not immediately return telephone calls seeking comment. Home telephone numbers for the three could not be readily located at the time of reporting.
Fraternity and University Launch Investigations
Jack Kreman, the Chief Executive Officer of Delta Tau Delta, issued a statement on behalf of the international fraternity, which is headquartered in Indiana. Kreman emphasised that the organisation encourages its members to cooperate fully with the investigation into the student's death and is dedicated to understanding the circumstances that led to this tragic outcome.
"Our position on hazing is unequivocal: it represents the complete opposite of brotherhood and constitutes a direct violation of the core values upheld by Delta Tau Delta," Kreman stated.
Concurrently, Northern Arizona University has temporarily suspended its campus chapter of Delta Tau Delta while the institution conducts its own internal investigation. This probe will focus specifically on university policies and compliance procedures.
University Reaffirms Commitment to Student Safety
In an official statement, the university highlighted its existing hazing prevention training programmes and stringent requirements designed to safeguard students. The institution stressed that the safety and wellbeing of its student body remain paramount among its priorities.
"We wish to make it absolutely clear: Violence, hazing, or any other behaviour that jeopardises the safety of others has no place whatsoever within the Northern Arizona University community," the statement read.
The case continues to develop as authorities piece together the exact sequence of events that culminated in the student's death. Both the fraternity's national leadership and university administrators have pledged their full cooperation with ongoing investigative efforts.
