Monkseaton Middle School has reopened under a new name, Monkseaton Coastal School, after plans to close the site were abandoned. The school welcomed pupils back today, nine months after initial council proposals to shut it entirely.
Closure plans reversed
In March, following a campaign by staff, parents, pupils, and the local community, North Tyneside Council dropped the closure plans. Instead, it opted to expand the school's year groups to secure its future.
The school is now transforming from a Year 5 to Year 8 middle school into a full Year 5 to Year 11 institution. The expansion will be phased, with the school bringing in its first Year 9 cohort in September next year, then Year 10 in 2028, and Year 11 in 2029.
Headteacher's vision
Headteacher Kirsty Nichols-Mackay said: “Today we formally begin our journey as Monkseaton Coastal School. This is more than a new name. It is a statement about who we are and who we aspire to be. The name reflects our place in the community, our ambition for young people and our commitment to helping children achieve future success.”
The school will celebrate this milestone with a formal opening ceremony on Friday, officially opened by Sir Alan Campbell MP, who supported the school's vision during the consultation process in October 2025.
Ms Nichols-Mackay added: “The transition represents a unique opportunity for families, staff, governors and pupils to help shape a distinctive and inclusive mainstream school. Opportunities like this are rare in education. Together, we have the chance to build something innovative, responsive and deeply rooted in the needs of our pupils and community.”
Council support and open evening
Lisa Ramshaw, head of education and inclusion at North Tyneside Council, said: “We continue to work closely with the leadership team at Monkseaton Coastal School as it progresses plans to expand its age range and admit Year 9 pupils from September 2027. The school is leading this process, and the council will continue to provide support and guidance as required throughout its development.”
Last October, the local authority proposed the closure of the school, alongside others, citing a 60% capacity rate, 83% of pupils living outside the catchment area, and concerns over its future financial security. However, the council’s cabinet approved expanding the year groups, which it felt would mitigate its previous concerns.
Families are encouraged to attend the school’s open evening on September 15 from 5.30pm, which provides an opportunity to tour the school, meet staff, and learn more about its future.
