A logic puzzle originally from a Singapore maths competition has gone viral, leaving many adults scratching their heads. The problem, involving characters Albert, Bernard, and Cheryl, was posted on Facebook by TV presenter Kenneth Kong and quickly spread worldwide.
The puzzle asks: Cheryl gives Albert the month of her birthday and Bernard the day. Albert says he doesn't know the birthday but knows Bernard doesn't either. Bernard then says he now knows the date, and Albert follows that he knows too. The task is to deduce Cheryl's birthday from a list of ten possible dates.
While initially reported as a primary school question, it was later clarified that the problem was from the Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad for 14- to 15-year-olds. Singapore consistently ranks at the top in international maths assessments for both primary and secondary levels.
The solution requires careful logical deduction: eliminating dates based on the statements. The correct answer is July 16. The puzzle has sparked widespread debate and highlights the high standards of maths education in Singapore.
