Italian Coastguard Recovers 19 Bodies from Migrant Boat Near Lampedusa
In a tragic incident off the coast of Italy, the Italian coastguard has recovered the bodies of 19 individuals from an inflatable boat south of the island of Lampedusa. A spokesperson for the coastguard confirmed the details to AFP, revealing that the rescue operation also saved 58 other people, including five children, during the early hours of Wednesday.
Rescue Operation Details
The rescue took place approximately 85 miles off the Italian island, within Libyan search and rescue waters. According to Roberto D’Arrigo, the boat was initially spotted by an Italian reconnaissance plane on Tuesday. However, with no Libyan coastguard or civilian ships available to assist in the area, a decision was made to dispatch an Italian coastguard vessel from Lampedusa to intervene.
D’Arrigo noted that some of the fatalities may have occurred during the transport back to Lampedusa, as the vessel encountered particularly rough weather conditions with waves reaching up to seven metres high. This highlights the perilous nature of such journeys across the Mediterranean Sea.
Survivors and Medical Treatment
Upon arrival in Lampedusa, the survivors were transported to the island, where seven individuals, including two children, required hospital treatment. Filippo Mannino, the mayor of Lampedusa, stated that these patients were suffering from hypothermia and intoxication from hydrocarbon fumes, underscoring the harsh conditions faced during the crossing.
Context of the Migrant Crisis
Lampedusa serves as a key landing point for migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean from North Africa, a route that has claimed many lives over the years. According to the UN’s International Organisation for Migration, 624 people have died or gone missing in the central Mediterranean so far this year, reflecting the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
This incident follows a previous disaster in August, when 27 people lost their lives in two shipwrecks off the coast of Lampedusa. Additionally, the Italian interior ministry reports that 6,117 migrants have landed on Italy’s shores this year, indicating a significant influx despite the dangers.
The recovery of bodies and rescue of survivors in this latest event further emphasise the urgent need for coordinated international efforts to address migration challenges and prevent further loss of life in the Mediterranean.
