A historic Beijing bakery has been swamped with customers after Chinese President Xi Jinping visited it during his Lunar New Year tour. Daoxiangcun, known for traditional snacks, saw a surge in demand for the items Xi selected.
Xi purchased a 45 yuan (£4.79) bundle of treats, including honey-glazed dough twists, cream-filled dough twists, and jujube flower pastries. The shop has since been restocking to meet demand, with many customers seeking the same products.
One customer, Zhao, bought 16 bags of the snacks, now pre-packaged into Xi-themed triples. She said, 'These are the same new year’s goods recommended by the general secretary, and people really like them. I want to buy some to give to my friends.'
Xi also visited Yili Bakery, buying a 14 yuan fruit bread and recalling enjoying their butter rolls as a child in Beijing’s hutongs. His personal tastes have previously inspired trends, such as in 2022 when young people wore 'office and bureau style clothes' as a homage to his attire.
