GCSE results day has arrived, and millions of students across England, Wales and Northern Ireland are collecting their grades this morning. For those who want to test their own knowledge, a tricky six-question maths quiz is circulating online.
Maths Quiz for GCSE Students
On TikTok, user @freegcsemathsteacher, who has 2.7 million followers, shared a set of nine maths questions. The first six are designed to challenge adults who think they might be smarter than a 16-year-old. The remaining questions involve graphs.
The questions are:
- Write 180 minutes in hours.
- Write 0.73 as a percentage.
- Work out 10 x (3 + 5).
- Write down a prime number that is between 20 and 30.
- Find a number that is exactly half way between 7 and 15.
- Harry is planning a holiday for 7 days. Here are the costs for the holiday for each person: Travel = £150, Hotel = £50 for each day, Spending money = £250. Work out the total cost of the holiday for 4 people for 7 days.
Reactions and Answers
The clip has received 18,600 likes and hundreds of comments. One user said: "My brain hurts," while another commented: "I was never good at maths ever." A third added: "I had to ask my six-year-old because I couldn't figure it out." Others found it easier, with one saying: "I did that in 1 second in my head," and another asking: "How do people fail this?"
The answers for the first six questions are: 1. 3 hours, 2. 73%, 3. 80 (using BIDMAS), 4. 23 or 29, 5. 11, 6. £3,000.
Grade Boundaries and Further Education
Official grade boundaries will be published by exam boards including AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR, CCEA and WJEC on results day. The results will determine whether students are eligible for further education.
