Ann Widdecombe's close friend, broadcaster Iain Dale, has shared a heartwarming email the former politician sent by mistake, revealing her thoughtful nature even when declining an invitation. Dale, speaking on LBC, recounted how Widdecombe, who died this week at age 78, politely turned down his invitation to his 2008 civil partnership due to her religious convictions, but her secretary accidentally forwarded her private response to him.
Accidental Email Reveals Kindness
Dale explained that he had invited Widdecombe to his civil partnership 18 years ago. He said: 'She knew my husband John very well, they got on extremely well together. John told me only last night how much he thought of her. I did invite her to our civil partnership in 2008, she declined. I didn't blame her for that because I knew her religious convictions would probably prevent her from doing so. But she let me down in a very kind way.'
The accidental email, forwarded by her secretary, contained Widdecombe's instruction: 'Can you please decline this, I can’t be seen at a civil partnership, but I don't want to hurt Iain.' Dale stressed he was not frustrated by the decision, understanding her deeply held beliefs.
A Friendship of Over 30 Years
Dale and Widdecombe maintained a close friendship for more than three decades, despite their differing views on social issues. Dale remarked: 'I didn't hold it against her, why would I? I don't hold it against other people whose views I disagree with. It was a deeply held conviction for her that marriage was between a man and a woman. I wouldn’t break off a friendship because I disagreed with someone over a social policy view.'
Following the news of her death, Dale posted a heartfelt tribute on social media, stating: 'I say in my book that Ann Widdecombe is one of the handful of true friends I have made in politics. I am bereft at her loss.'
Widdecombe's Death and Legacy
Ann Widdecombe, a former Home Office Minister known for her socially conservative views, was found dead in her home on Thursday morning, just over 24 hours after her last television appearance. Police have provided updates on the investigation, but the cause of death has not been officially confirmed. Dale was among the first to publicly honour her, highlighting her integrity and the depth of their friendship.
