Matt Willis has opened up about a "small" issue that caused a "big problem" in his marriage to Strictly Come Dancing host Emma Willis. The Busted bassist, who has been married to Emma since 2008, revealed the couple sought couples counselling but kept having the "same conversation" without resolution.
Couples Counselling and the 'Same Conversation'
Speaking on his podcast On the Mend, Matt disclosed: "We had this same thing that was kind of coming up in our relationship. I won't go into too many details, but same thing, same conversation over and over again, never getting anywhere." He explained that once they identified the root cause, the problem disappeared entirely. "It was so small when I think about it, you know, but it was actually massive. That was everything that was holding us away from truly loving," he said.
Matt's Addiction Journey and Sobriety
Matt, who spent time in rehab and featured in the documentary Matt Willis: Fighting Addiction, has previously spoken about his battles with cocaine and alcohol. He has remained sober since 2016. The couple share three children: Isabelle, Ace, and Trixie.
Emma's New Role as Strictly Host
Last month, Emma was unveiled as the new host of Strictly Come Dancing, alongside Josh Widdicombe and Johannes Radebe, replacing long-serving presenters Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly, who departed in 2025. Emma said: "I can't wait to spend my weekends with Josh and Jojo, the incredible dancers and the judges. Fingers crossed for a 10 from them!"
Constructive Criticism and Personal Growth
Matt also revealed that Emma gives him constructive feedback, noting that he has a tendency not to follow through with his plans. He asked Emma what he needed to work on, and she said: "You have so many ideas, which is hard to keep up with at times, and I don't want to disregard your passion and ideas for stuff, but there's so many, and so few of them are going to take flight. You don't follow through on most of them, and some of them which you come to that are important, you don't follow through with." Matt admitted her criticism was "hard to hear" but said it was something he needed to work on.
