Five people are missing after a fire tore through a restaurant in the Swiss tourist destination of Thusis. The blaze broke out after midnight on August 21 at a building housing the Portuguese eatery Beverin.
Almost 100 firefighters responded to the scene. The building's roof was forced open with a crane after the staircase collapsed, according to The Mirror.
Injuries and Casualties
Fourteen people were able to flee the restaurant. Eight people sustained injuries, including two believed to be seriously wounded, two moderately wounded, and four slightly wounded. The cause of the fire is not yet known, but it is believed to have started on the building's second floor.
Emergency Response
Officials in the Thusis municipality have offered accommodation and food to anyone affected by the fire. Multiple fire crews responded, including those from Cazis, Oberer Heinzenberg, Ems Chemie, and Albula. Several volunteers from the Thusis Samaritan Association also attended the scene, along with 16 officers from the Graubünden Cantonal Police.
Tourist Destination
The Alpine Graubünden region is a popular holiday destination for winter sports and summer nature activities. Police are reportedly investigating the cause of the fire.
