Around 100 firefighters are tackling a large fire involving 50 tonnes of household waste at a waste facility in Deptford, south-east London, with train services disrupted as a result.
Fire at Landman Way waste facility
The London Fire Brigade said 15 fire engines and around 100 firefighters are responding to the fire on Landman Way in Deptford/Bermondsey. The brigade was first called at 19:59, and crews from East Greenwich, Old Kent Road, Deptford and surrounding fire stations have been sent to the scene. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
Local residents have been urged to keep windows and doors closed due to the smoke. The brigade stated: "Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters are responding to a fire at a waste facility in Deptford. Local residents should keep doors and windows closed where possible due to the amount of smoke being produced by the fire."
Train disruption at London Bridge
National Rail said it is expecting disruption at London Bridge until the end of the day, with services possibly "cancelled, delayed or revised". Two lines between New Cross and London Bridge are blocked for safety reasons due to the fire at a recycling plant. Passengers can use tickets at no extra cost on London Underground services between London Terminals.
Previous fire at same location
The blaze follows another at a recycling centre in Bermondsey on June 8, when 15 fire engines and around 100 firefighters were deployed to a fire on Landmann Way. That incident also led to train cancellations.
People on social media have shared footage of huge flames and plumes of smoke rising over the London skyline, with some suggesting the fire is at the same recycling centre as in June. The London Fire Brigade has not yet issued an official comment on the cause or the location of the current fire.
