A woman has shared a story on Reddit about a fully grown man who stole her plane seat when she was a child traveling alone on a long-haul flight, offering an embarrassing excuse for his behavior.
The Incident
When she was around 10 or 11, the woman immigrated from Jamaica to the United States by herself. It was her first time flying, and after an emotional goodbye with her mother at the airport, she boarded the plane alone. To help calm her nerves, her grandmother had paid extra for a window seat so she could look outside during the flight. She said: "To this day I'm thankful that she got that for me because it really did help me feel better about flying alone."
After taking her seat by the window, she noticed the middle seat was empty while a man was sitting in the aisle seat beside her. Not long into the journey, he allegedly asked her to swap seats so he could sit by the window instead. She said: "He said to me, 'Change with me so that I can have a window seat and you can have the aisle seat'. I said no."
The Excuse
According to the woman, the man did not take the rejection well and tried to convince her she did not deserve the seat anyway. She added: "Then he said to me, 'You're not even using the window seat properly. You're not looking out the window'. I still said no because I felt a sort of attachment to the seat because it was bought for me." After grumbling to himself, the man eventually fell silent and the flight continued without issue.
However, things took a turn when the young girl got up to use the bathroom. After working up the courage to leave her seat, she made her way down the aisle—only to quickly change her mind after becoming frightened by the aircraft toilet. When she returned moments later, she could not believe what she found. The man had moved into her seat.
Confrontation and Resolution
She said: "I stood there in the middle of the walkway and said, 'Excuse me sir, you're in my seat'. He doesn't even look at me and mumbled out, 'You're not using the window'." Refusing to back down, she remained standing in the aisle until a flight attendant arrived and asked what was happening. After both passengers presented their tickets, the crew member confirmed the window seat belonged to the child.
But rather than apologizing, the man allegedly argued that she was "just a little kid" and was not using the seat correctly. He claimed the window seat was being "wasted" on her and insisted he should be allowed to keep it. The woman said the flight attendant eventually offered to move him elsewhere, but he continued to argue before finally giving up and following instructions. She added: "He then tried to say that I should go find another seat and he'll keep this one." Eventually, the man was moved and she was allowed to return to the seat her grandmother had paid for.
Reflection
Looking back on the experience years later, she said she has never forgotten the stranger's sense of entitlement or the excuse he used to justify his actions.
