A deadly shooting in Chicago's River North neighbourhood has left one man dead and three others seriously injured, marking a violent end to the Christmas weekend in the United States.
Brazen Attack on Luxury Vehicle
According to Chicago police, the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 28 December 2025, at approximately 2:35 a.m. on the 400 block of North LaSalle Drive. Four men were entering a green Lamborghini SUV when four suspects approached on foot and began firing.
The victims, all adult men, were rushed to Northwestern Hospital. A 34-year-old man, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds, was pronounced dead. The three surviving victims include a 36-year-old shot in the chest, a 43-year-old shot in the back, and a 35-year-old who suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the body. Their current medical conditions have not been disclosed by authorities.
Nationwide Wave of Gun Violence
This Chicago attack was not an isolated event. It formed part of a disturbing streak of mass shootings reported across the US during the final weekend of 2025.
In downtown Phoenix, Arizona, a shooting near 1st and Washington streets just before 2:30 a.m. on Sunday left a man with life-threatening injuries and three women wounded. Meanwhile, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, five people were hospitalised after a shooting early Sunday near Southwest 2nd Street, an area known for its late-night bars. No arrests have been made in connection with either incident.
Investigation and National Context
Back in Chicago, the suspects fled the scene in a vehicle and remain at large. Cook County Crime Stoppers has announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Paul Rutherford, the organisation's executive director, described the act as "brazen and violent" and urged anyone with information to come forward.
The grim statistics for 2025, compiled by the Gun Violence Archive, show that while the number of mass shootings has decreased, the problem remains severe. The archive, which defines a mass shooting as an incident with a minimum of four victims shot (excluding the shooter), has recorded at least 405 such events nationwide in 2025. This figure represents a decline from 503 during the same period in 2024 and continues a downward trend from a peak of 689 in 2021.
As investigators in Chicago continue their search for the gunmen, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent challenge of gun violence facing communities across the United States.
