A devastating chemical tank implosion at a pulp and paper mill in Washington state on Tuesday has resulted in an undisclosed number of fatalities, as confirmed by local authorities and company officials.

In a joint statement, Nippon Dynawave Packaging Co. and local law enforcement reported that the rupture of the tank caused multiple critical injuries alongside fatalities. Authorities emphasized that there is no immediate threat to the public.
Mike Gorsuch, battalion chief of the Longview Fire Department, described the scene as a mass casualty incident. He stated that first responders decontaminated patients and transported them to hospitals in Longview and Vancouver, Washington.
Response and Facility Overview
The Nippon Dynawave facility is a pulp and paper mill that also serves as a liquid packaging plant, producing materials for tissues, printing paper, cups, plates, cartons, and other goods. According to the Washington State Department of Ecology, the plant employs approximately 1,000 people.
Approximately 40 firefighters and paramedics responded, along with a regional hazardous materials team. The incident was reported at 7:19 a.m. Nippon Dynawave had not immediately responded to requests for comment.
In a separate but unrelated incident, thousands of residents in southern California remained evacuated on Tuesday due to a damaged chemical tank at an aerospace plant.
