Cammy Devlin sent off as Rangers penalty claim overturned

Cammy Devlin was sent off for Rangers against Jablonec after a VAR review turned his penalty claim into a straight red card for a high tackle on defender Jriri Slama.

The midfielder had gone to ground in the visitors' box, expecting a spot kick, but instead found himself dismissed after the off-field officials reviewed the incident. The Light Blues led 1-0 from the first leg of the Conference League tie but were forced to battle to hold the lead after the sending off.

Devlin left confused by the call

Devlin initially turned away expecting a penalty, but was left baffled when referee Marian Barbu showed him a red card. Television cameras captured him asking the officials: "What happened?"

Speaking on Rangers TV, former Ibrox midfielder Kevin Thomson said: "I never thought it was nasty. I thought he was almost falling over when he goes for it. He tries to shield it with his body, but it's unfortunate - his foot placement. It's not pretty."

Thomson added: "I certainly don't think that is what he has meant. I think Cammy Devlin still thinks that he is getting a penalty. I almost feel I know what he has done - he has put his foot in high and lost his footing, a bit rash in the tackle. I think a yellow card might have been more than efficient, but it's not a pretty one to watch."

BBC pundits apologise for missing the incident

On BBC Sportsound, Steven Thompson and Andy Halliday admitted they missed the flashpoint and initially expected a penalty to be awarded to the hosts. Halliday said: "It looked like Cammy Devlin tried to hook his leg in front of the defender to initiate the contact. My guess is that he has caught him high in trying to do that. We were debating whether it was a penalty or not..."

Later in the broadcast, Halliday apologised, saying: "I apologise whole-heartedly. I don't know what he is doing, I can't comprehend that. It looks like he is trying to get in front of the defender, and plants the studs in his leg."

Co-commentator Thompson added: "I don't think anybody in the stadium had a clue what was happening. Maybe this is when VAR audio would be a good thing in the stadium. It's rash and reckless."
