Armed police swarmed a Thameslink train at Gatwick station on June 24 after receiving reports that a youth was potentially carrying a firearm on board. The incident prompted a swift response from British Transport Police (BTP), who confirmed they were called at around 1:30pm to the train heading towards Brighton.
Police Response and Passenger Experience
Officers, including armed units, boarded the train at Gatwick station. Passengers reported on social media that train doors remained closed upon arrival, and armed police instructed them to move further down the carriage while officers dealt with the situation. The BTP later stated that both armed and unarmed officers removed four teenagers from the train for a search.
Search Results and Arrest
The search uncovered an imitation firearm, which is believed to have triggered the initial reports. One teenager was arrested on suspicion of possession of an imitation firearm. The BTP reassured the public that there was no threat to public safety.
In a statement, British Transport Police said: "Officers were called at around 1.30pm today (June 24) to a report that a youth was potentially carrying a firearm. Officers responded alongside armed police and four teenagers were removed from the train for the purposes of a search. One was arrested on suspicion of possession of an imitation firearm, and there is not any threat to the public. Enquiries are ongoing."
